Arusha National Park, located in northern Tanzania near the city of Arusha, is a compact yet diverse gem covering 137 square kilometers (53 square miles). Established in 1960, it lies in the shadow of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), and offers a striking mix of landscapes—from lush montane forests and crater lakes to grassy savannahs and alkaline wetlands. Leopards and hyenas roam discreetly, but lions are absent, making it safer for walking safaris—a unique feature. Over 400 bird species, including pelicans, turacos, and the striking Hartlaub’s turaco, delight birdwatchers.

Arusha National Park’s proximity to Arusha city (about 25 kilometers or 15 miles) makes it a convenient stop for travelers en route to larger parks. Activities include game drives, canoeing on the Momella Lakes, and guided hikes up Mount Meru, which doubles as a training climb for Kilimanjaro aspirants. Conservation efforts focus on protecting its fragile ecosystems from human encroachment and invasive species, like the water hyacinth in the lakes.
